Message From Executive Director

Greetings from the Executive Director’s office! Well, 2010 is stacking up to be as eventful a year as was 2009. We have been working over the past year to put a firm staff foundation under the SSH so that we can support the growth and services provided to our members.

Message From The President

Dear members of SSH,

I would like to belatedly update you on the initiative for simulation in resource poor environments. This has taken longer than I hoped but I believe we will be making progress over the next six months.

Following IMSH, more than 70 individuals expressed interest in working in this area.  Responses indicate that  pediatrics, emergency medicine, anesthesia, nursing, ob, critical care, surgery and engineering are natural sections within the larger interest group.

Several individuals within the simulation in resource poor environment group have expressed interest in and are willing to serve as the organizing leadership of the interest group. They are:  Renee Pyburn, Nathan Brent, France Doyle, Nicole Shilkofski, Alberto diArmendi, and Guid Oei.

The organizing group has developed a mission statement and also developed some working principles.  Our Mission statement is:

To develop and implement low cost, sustainable, culturally sensitive, and durable simulation techniques with the goal of improving healthcare in resource poor environments.

To begin, we believe we should begin with small projects move on to larger projects/choosing a region(s) on which to focus. We believe it is important to establish a track record with smaller projects initially.

    • Need to identify  government or NGO collaborators in countries-those with local knowledge
    • Needs assessment for particular area/region.
    • Agenda will  differ based on local needs
    • Train the trainer model probably best:  target an area and work as an educational package, proof of concept.

To that end, we have developed a needs assessment that will allow us to identify the areas of particular expertise and experience in the interest group.  Your help with this is extremely important. If you are interested in participating in the interest group, please complete this tool on constant comment using this link:

I have also asked Stas Jourin to create a link from the SSH website to a dedicated yahoo group.  This will allow all individuals interested in simulation in resource poor environments (not only SSH members)  a dedicated electronic communication medium and not require a log in to the SSH site.   The link can be accessed from resources tab on the SSH website (http://www.ssih.org/SSIH/SSIH/Resources/Default.aspx) and the screenshot is below.  Click on the simulationRPE group and you will be taken directly to the yahoo group. NB: You will need to create a yahoo account if you do not already have one.

Again, I apologize for the delay moving forward.  I appreciate your patience and hope we can advance more quickly now. I would also suggest that we request Special Interest Group status within SSH and plan a meeting at IMSH 2011. While I hope we will have begun our real work well before then, we need to begin that process now.

As always, we appreciate your input.

Sincerely,

Mary Patterson
